Rev. Ken Lewis
When Chaplain Kenneth Lewis retired after 30 years in the U. S. Navy, he was affectionately known by the Marines he served as “Father Guido.” He received that moniker while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His camaraderie with those Marines would continue after retirement as a LifeSkills trainer at Camp Lejeune, N.C., prepping them for mental and spiritual wellness.
Ken Lewis first served as a Navy Corpsman for eight years before beginning his theological education. He received his BA degree from Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florida in pre-Seminary studies. He attended Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, receiving a Masters of Divinity in 1990. He also has pursued doctoral studies at the Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies in Jacksonville, Florida.
He pastored three civilian congregations before being recalled as chaplain to the USS Holland, a submarine tender in Guam. From there, he served on the USS Frank Cable, another tender; Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; Battalion Chaplain at Headquarters, Camp Smith, Hawaii; Marine Air Group 29 in New River, N.C. and Task Force Tarawa in Iraq. His final tour was as Deputy Director of CREDO (spiritual development program) at Camp Lejeune. He is a Certified Instructor for a number of personal growth and communications programs.
He and his wife, L.A., were married in October, 2022. Cell 252-503-1374
Rev. Sherrye DeFreytas
Sherrye DeFreytas was ordained an interfaith minister at St. John the Divine in New York City in June 2007. She attended The New Seminary, founded by a Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic priest. Interfaith ministry is a good fit for hospital chaplaincy, and she trained in Clinical Pastoral Education at Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania and at Sentara Williamsburg hospital in Williamsburg, VA.
Before, during, and after seminary, she is a teacher and book editor and writer, mostly in health-related topics. As people rediscover energy medicine, her two great interests—spirituality and health—flow together like the entwining of the caduceus.
Sherrye was baptized into her grandparents’ Southern Baptist church, grew up an Army Protestant, and became an Episcopalian as an adult—interfaith all the way. She attended the IRCC Chapel whenever visiting her parents here over the past 30 years and on moving here in January 2024, joined the Chapel Board as Secretary. She preached her first sermon in August 2025.
